Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

by Marinda Darnell

Every year I see advertised different walks and benefits for charities and research organizations. And every year I think to myself that I need to get involved with one of them because they are really trying to help other people. And every year something always comes up, or I just do not fill out the paper work, or I forget about it. This year is going to be different. This year I am going to do something to help.

Most people if they sit down to think about it know someone who has breast cancer, is a Survivor, or has died from breast cancer. Some may even know multiple people. My Grandmother and cousin are Survivors. Cancer runs very rampant in my family; most do not survive. So when I was thinking of where I could lend a hand, cancer research came to mind. Then it occurred to me that the more people know of this, the better, which is why I enlisted the help of The Lady Gamer (TLG). After talking this over with a few people, I tentatively polled the staff of TLG, and was surprised by the interest and immediate sign ups. After only a very short discussion, we have made a team.

Looking over the choice of research foundation options in the Chicagoland area, we settled on the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer (AWBC). So far two of the staff will be walking the length of a marathon or more, and at least one (me) will be helping as part of the staff crew for the event. What the AWBC does is raise money for breast cancer research and helps establish grants to various laboratories to continue or fund new breast cancer research. The event is a two day walking event where each walker must have raised a minimum pledge by the first day of the event. So far just in the Chicago area, the AWBC has raised more then $5.4 million.

Every three minutes someone is diagnosed with breast cancer. Just think of the odds that this is going to be someone that you personally know. While I do not want to compute those odds, any odds are a bit too much for me. Walking a marathon seems like it is just a little bit to do in order to help the millions of people who have been diagnosed with this disease, and those that will be in the future. As women, we need to be concerned about an issue that many people consider to be a woman's issue. What people do not realize is that breast cancer affects men as well.
